Abstract

As genetic resources of indigenous breeds are one of the most valuable and strategically important reserves that a country possesses. Bush, Istrian cattle and Slavonia Syrmian Podolac potentially valuable breed in the future development of agricultural production because they provide security for sustainable food production. Their disappearance is reduced biodiversity in agriculture and, overall biodiversity of the ecosystem. A unique genetic inheritance devised hundreds and thousands of years and, as such, to some extent unique. The cattle industry is a relatively small number of users with low economic value of farming and farming subsidies. The exception is the breeding Slavonian Syrmian podolca, where there was a significant income from incentive per customer. The main motive of keeping the original breed of tradition and relatively simple technology and low cost of cultivation. As, unfortunately, has never approached the cultivation of cattle to improve beef and dairy traits, this breed showed no particular significance, and its value began to fade with the advent of mechanization in agriculture. Slavonia and Syrmian Podolac the late eighties was on the verge of extinction. Since 1997, there is a program of systematic protection of the remaining population. Although the protection program was launched a decade ago, keeping the population primarily on a narrow site has limited its growth. Since it is suitable for less intensive production systems holding, devising programs and economic use. Preserving the breed is very important because they are just indigenous cattle adapted to local conditions and develop resistance to disease.
