Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
The cloning of farm animals theoretically opens opportunities for a number of advanteges, such as faster growing, strengtnes resistance and robustness of animals. In particular, the benefits of cloning are founded in the application for the production of drugs or to conserve genetic resources of endangered animal species. However, cloning of farm animals is still related to certain difficulties that occur by using cloning techniques. As the most common, there are developmental abnormalities, effects on the health and well-being in the perinatal and juvenile period, especially in calves and piglets, large offspring syndrome, and problems during pregnancy surrogate mothers. Even with the progress of science and the training methods of cloning, which would reduce those problems; ethical dilemmas remain, which are particularly related to animal cloning for food production. This paper analyses the advantages and disadvantages of cloning farm animals, ethical dilemmas, the latest recommendations and EU legislation, as well as positions in Croatia in field of cloning farm animals.
