Abstract

Varoosis is a parasitic disease of adult bees and brood cells caused by the mite Varroa destructor. Varoa are large enough to be seen with the unaided eye. The adult female mites are reddish-brown to dark brown and oval in shape, measuring 1.00 to 1.7 mm long and 1.5 to 1.9 mm wide. Adult males are yellowish with lightly tanned legs and spherical body shape, and they are much smaller than females (0.8 mm to 0.9 mm). They have only breeding role and do not suck the blood (hemolymph). The disease spreads with drones, grabbing, jumping the bees in the apiary, in new regions varoosis spreads with swarms, migration of the stall, selling queens and other traffic bees. Clear symptoms are seen only when the mite had spread very much, and when it attacked a larger number of bees. The bees are agitated by moving the comb, spin in a circle, coming out in front of the hive, sometimes there die. Without monitoring developments varroa population in the bee hive, as well as monitoring the effects of the medication, will be no results in fighting mites. Monitoring population of mites include brood sampling, natural mite fall, counting mites on adult bees and the use of honey bees that are resistant to varroa.
