Abstract

Parallel abstract (English)
Black Slavonian pig is an authentic breed of pig that was created in the region of Slavonia in the late 19th century. Creating of this breed has started in 1860., when selected sows of pile mangulica were crossed with boars of Berkshire breed. Black Slavonian pig was the most widespread breed of pig in the area of Slavonia. Black Slavonian pig is suitable for keeping in semi-opened system because of its strong constitution, it's pigmented (well tolerated to solar radiation), uses large amounts od roughage very well, it's very resistant breed, with more modest accomodation and nutritional requirements in comparison with white high yielding breeds and as such is also suitable for keeping at the small family farms. Since the black Slavonian pig is authentic breed that has a certain economic value, not just the genetic heritage, but also traditional, it is necessary to take care about preserving this breed and to continue with cultivating it in the future. Considering the fact that productive characteristics of this breed are small compared to white high yielding breeds, in order to encourage producers to cultivate this breed, the government has helped them through different subsidies. Since it is clear that the government will not be able to finance this production permanently, this pig should be valued primarily for its cured meats (ham, kulen, sausage, bacon, čvarci) as it is done at the family farm of Pavo Jarić.
