Abstract
Biljne vrste imaju karakterističan fenolni profil koji poput otiska prsta pomaže pri određivanju biljke. Genetsko naslijeđeni fenolni profil posljedica je evolucije, odnosno promjena koje su bile nužne za opstanak biljke u okolišu. Biljni fenoli su sekundarni metaboliti koji su uključeni u obrambeni mehanizam biljke protiv gljivičnih bolesti i štetnih kukaca. Fenolni spojevi su biljni pigmenti, djeluju kao antioksidansi i kelatori metalnih iona, signalni posrednici između biljke i drugih organizama, te kao zaštita od ultra-ljubičastog (UV) zračenja. Fenoli utječu na rast biljke tako što: reguliraju širenje biljne stanice, utječu na aktivnost hormona rasta biljke, kontroliraju kretanje biljke utječući na turgor biljnih stanica, te reguliraju klijanje sjemenja. Biljke također reagiraju i na razne neprijatelje u okolišu koji koriste konstitutivne i inducirane fenolne tvari koje utječu na karakteristike osjetljivosti i otpornosti napadnute biljke.

Plant species have distinctive phenolic profile as a fingerprint helps in determining the plant. Genetically inherited phenolic profile is the result of evolution or changes that were necessary for the survival of plants in the environment. Plant phenols are secondary metabolites that are involved in the defence mechanism of plants against fungal diseases and harmful insects. Phenolic compounds are plant pigments, act as antioxidants and chelators of metal ions, signaling mediators between plants and other organisms, as well as protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Phenols affect plant growth by: regulating plant cell expansion, affect the activity of plant growth hormone, control the movement of the plants by affecting the turgor of the plant cells, and regulate seed germination. Plants also respond to the various enemies in environments that use constitutive and induced phenolic compounds that affect the characteristics of sensitivity and resistance of host plants.
