Abstract

The production of vegetable crops in Bosnia and Herzegovina is constantly increasing, and the cultures that are most produced are potatoes, cabbage, tomatoes and peppers. Research was conducted on the family farm “Šumić” in Žepče. Aim of the research was to monitor diseases and pests in the greenhouse cultivation of tomato (Oxheart, Signorina F1) and cucumbers (Profi F1, Adam F1, Opalit F1), with the application of appropriate crop protection. Occurrence of harmful pests was monitored with the help of yellow and blue sticky traps, with soil examination by digging sampling holes and with the visual inspection. A review of soil in greenhouse with tomatoes showed larger presence of stone centipedes, while sticky traps showed presence of whitefly. Observed disease on tomatoes was late blight. Late blight infected 60% of tomato plants. Oxheart variety was more sensitive in relation to hybrid variety Signorina F1. Crop quality is reduced due to high infection. Chemical protection measures failed to eliminate this disease completely. In cucumber production there was no significant damage from diseases, but presence of wireworms in soil is recorded and presence of whitefly is recorded on sticky traps. Since wireworms infection did not exceed economic thresholds there was no need for chemical treatments against this pest. At the end of the growing season very strong aphid infestation is noticed on cucumbers. Since it emerged at the end of the growing season the plants are removed from the greenhouse and destroyed. An analysis of revenues and expenses of production of these two vegetable crops showed economic viability of production. Production of cucumber and tomato on family farm “Šumić” is cost-effective, but require more control of diseases and pests.
